Roots rocker Bonnie Raitt will open the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand season on Aug. 27.

Raitt, 76, has a long history with the Fair, having played there eight times starting in 1990. Her most recent visit was in 2016 on a bill with singer/songwriter Richard Thompson that drew more than 8,000 fans.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recorded her 1971 debut album in the Twin Cities and her brother, Steve, was also a longtime local resident before his 2009 death from cancer.

In a 2013 interview with the Pioneer Press, Raitt recalled her most memorable local performances: “Oh gosh, some of my favorite gigs of 43 years on the road have been in Minneapolis. The parties afterward, seeing the number of friends I have maintained from the old days. I love the club scene, and we try to always leave a couple of nights off so we can go down to any number of clubs. I used to water ski on the lakes. It is bittersweet to come by now and not have (Steve) there.

“I would say my favorite gigs are at the (Minnesota State) Fair. One of the most emotional ones was after my brother passed away. It was so bizarre to not have him up there singing with me. Another night that was quite a shock was after Stevie Ray (Vaughan) passed away. Both of those nights had amazing skies, amazing storms. It was almost like someone was talking to us from beyond.”

Raitt’s most recent album, 2022’s “Just Like That …,” won three Grammy Awards, bringing her total to 13.
