MELBOURNE (AP) — La máxima favorita Aryna Sabalenka derrotó a una tenaz Bai Zhouxuan por 6-3, 6-2 el miércoles para avanzar a la tercera ronda del Abierto de Australia.
Sabalenka necesitó siete puntos de set en la Arena Rod Laver para llevarse el primer parcial contra la tenista china, que se centró en la defensa y utilizó ingeniosos drop shots para mantenerse en el partido.
La bielorrusa ganó los títulos del Abierto de Australia en 2023 y 2024, pero fue subcampeona hace un año ante Madison Keys. Sabalenka busca su quinto título de Grand Slam en individuales, habiendo conquistado también el Abierto de Estados Unidos dos veces.
Bai estaba haciendo su segunda aparición en el Abierto de Australia y alcanzó la segunda ronda por primera vez.
