King Philip pulls of dramatic victory to stay undefeated
CANTON – With a 3-1 deficit with 8:01 left in regulation, King Philip rallied to not only tie the game in the final minutes against defending Div. 2 state champion Medfield, but to ultimately get another victory on the young season.
King Philip scored three times in the third, including twice over the final 1:51 to take down Medfield 4-3 in a nonleague tilt at Canton Ice House Saturday evening.
“That’s a heck of a win,” said coach Tim Langevin. “We called the timeout with six minutes left and talked about getting back to our game. We didn’t seem to be having our game tonight. Kind of throwing pucks away and making bad decisions with the puck. Luckily, we picked up a power play early and then got things going.”
Medfield (5-3) went up 3-1 at the 6:59 mark as eighth grader Kate Grzeskowiak found the back of the net.
From there, King Philip (7-0) needed a spark, and freshman Stephanie Leblanc answered the call with her first tally to cut the deficit to 3-2 just 1:42 later.
“(Leblanc) is a great player,” Langevin said. “She’s just a freshman with a lot of energy. She shoots the puck really well.”
The teams traded chances, but King Philip got the first 5-on-3 with 2:17 left and 26 seconds later Leblanc wrapped it around to knot it up, 3-3.
King Philip then got another 5-on-3 chance, and with 12.7 seconds left, sophomore Annabel Curran sniped it home to give King Philip their first lead, 4-3.
“She had a tough game the other night against Wayland, but she bounces right back,” said Langevin about the sophomore. “They battled, and it was tough, but they just didn’t quit right until the end.”

King Philip then ran the waning seconds off the clock to remain unbeaten.
After a scoreless first period that saw Medfield outshoot King Philip, 8-7, Medfield broke through with a little bit of puck luck in the second.
Freshman Isla Tanguay shot the puck right in front of the net on the third power play chance for Medfield, and the puck bounced off a King Philip defender to net the first tally of the contest at the 5:32 mark.
King Philip answered back a little over three minutes later as freshman Ella Morgan put a rebound chance in the back of the net to make it 1-1 at the 8:48 mark.
“Honestly, I thought that was what would turn us around a little bit,” Langevin said about the second-period goal. “All year, it starts at the defensive end, and we just didn’t have it in the defensive zone tonight. So, it wasn’t creating that offense we normally do.”
Medfield wasn’t done in the frame as eighth grader Abby Hermann sniped a shot from the right faceoff circle to put Medfield back in front 2:02 later as her team led 2-1 after two.
