Celtics add former Nets starter to G League team
The Celtics’ G League affiliate added a first-round draft pick to its roster this weekend.
The Maine Celtics claimed 23-year-old guard Keon Johnson off waivers on Saturday, according to the G League transaction wire.
Drafted 21st overall by the Knicks in 2021, Johnson has 161 games of NBA experience, including 68 starts. The Tennessee product saw action in 79 games for Brooklyn last season, making 56 starts for the rebuilding Nets and averaging 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
Johnson previously spent time with the Clippers and Trail Blazers, overlapping with current Celtics guard Anfernee Simons in Portland. He was traded to Phoenix in the multi-team 2023 deal that sent Jrue Holiday to Portland (a precursor to Holiday’s subsequent trade to Boston) but was released by the Suns a month later. The Nets waived Johnson in September.
Listed at 6-foot-5, Johnson is a career 37.9% shooter (23.4% from 3-point range). He was not active for Maine’s game against the Westchester Knicks on Sunday.
