Hull shuts out Hopedale to advance to Div. 5 state championship
MANSFIELD — Usually, it’s wise to go either around or over walls. That wasn’t an option for Hull’s Brianna Ramos.
The sophomore midfielder instead went right through a wall of defenders on No. 2 Hopedale, and it made the ultimate difference for the third-seeded Pirates in the Division 5 state girls soccer semifinals Tuesday night.
Ramos sliced through seven Hopedale defenders late in the second half on her way to netting the only goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Hull at Mansfield High’s Alumni Field. Ramos’ goal sends the Pirates (12-5-3) back to the state final for a second consecutive year, where they will face No. 4 Monson at Curry College on Saturday (12:15 p.m.).
“I couldn’t believe she kept weaving through everybody and then found the back of the net. Fantastic,” Hull head coach Stew Bell said. “I was dumbfounded. I was just like, ‘Did she just do that?’ I know how good she is, but even I was dumbfounded by that goal.”
Hopedale (14-7-1) contained Hull’s dynamic attack, which scored 21 goals in its previous three tournament games, for a large majority of the contest by holding the Pirates to long-range shots that barely bothered Blue Raiders keeper Anna Fafard (eight saves).
But then Ramos took matters into her own hands in the 65th minute with the sides in a scoreless deadlock. The sensational individual effort from Ramos, in which she spun around a defender to begin her drive to the net before finishing in close, was the only goal Hopedale allowed all postseason.
“I just gave it everything I had to dribble through all of them and make it toward the net and just kind of went in,” Ramos said. “It was definitely surprising, but it was also really exciting.”
Hull then had to hold off a late charge with Hopedale searching for the equalizer.
That put Pirates senior goalie Montana Alibrandi into the spotlight. Alibrandi made her first start in eight weeks due to a leg injury and made one of her two saves in the tense closing minutes with Hopedale struggling to get shots on frame.
Alibrandi stepping up plus Ramos’ heroics have Hull looking to take care of unfinished business after falling in last year’s state final.
“It’s unbelievable because at points this year, probably didn’t think it was going to happen, the players and me,” Bell said. “… To the girls’ credit, they kept working and down the home stretch we’ve been absolutely phenomenal.”
