Autopsy: 1967 crash killed Minnesota man found dead in submerged car
A central Minnesota man found dead in his submerged car after 58 years was the victim of an automobile crash, authorities say.
Roy G. Benn’s 1963 Buick Electra was discovered Aug. 10 in the waters of the Mississippi River in Sartell. An angler using a sonar device made the discovery, and Benton County authorities recovered human remains inside the car, which was half-full of sediment. DNA testing confirmed the remains were those of Benn.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office found no evidence of foul play and concluded that Benn, who was 59 when he was last seen on Sept. 25, 1967, died as the result of a single motor vehicle crash with water submersion.
At the time of his disappearance in Sartell, Benn was reportedly carrying a large sum of cash. A long and fruitless search for the missing man ensued.
