Jaylen Brown officially active for Celtics season opener vs. 76ers

The Celtics had all of their non-Jayson Tatum players available for Wednesday night’s season opener.

Jaylen Brown, Boston’s leading man in Tatum’s absence, was upgraded from questionable to active before tipoff against the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said pregame that Brown needed to go through his warmup before determining whether he’d be able to suit up. The four-time All-Star wing has been dealing with a left hamstring strain that he suffered in last Wednesday’s preseason finale, but he was able to fully participate in practice Monday and Tuesday.

Brown will be a vital player as the Celtics look to withstand the loss of Tatum, who’s set to miss at least the first several months of the season as he recovers from Achilles surgery. Brown also is looking to bounce back from an uneven 2024-25 season in which he posted the second-worst field-goal percentage (46.3%) and worst 3-point shooting percentage (32.4%) of his nine-year career while battling a lingering knee issue.

Tatum was the only Celtics player ruled out for Wednesday’s game. The Sixers were without Paul George (left knee surgery recovery), Trendon Watford (left hamstring tightness) and Jared McCain (right thumb surgery recovery).

Star center Joel Embiid was removed from Philadelphia’s injury report but is on a minutes restriction to open the season, according to head coach Nick Nurse.
