Charges: St. Paul bar customer dies after security guard’s punch
A man has died after a weekend assault in St. Paul and a charge against a security guard was amended Tuesday to manslaughter.
The 33-year-old was on life support after he was diagnosed with a “devastating brain bleed,” according to the criminal complaint. He died at the hospital on Monday night.
The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office charged Jose Eucario Conejo Marquez, 28, of North St. Paul, on Monday with first-degree assault. He’s now charged with first-degree manslaughter while committing fifth-degree assault.
Marquez allegedly punched a customer early Sunday morning, causing the man to fall and hit his head, in the parking lot of the Blues Saloon at 1638 Rice St.

A woman reported that she and the 33-year-old were on a first date. She said he got jealous after multiple men hit on her, and they were kicked out of the bar because he was upset.
Surveillance video showed the man and woman walked into the parking lot, and the man pointed at the woman. Marquez stepped between them, punched the customer in the head and shoved him into the parking lot.
Marquez swung another fist at the customer and missed. The customer ended up leaning against a parked vehicle and Marquez “closed in” and punched him again, the complaint said. The customer fell to the ground.
Marquez told officers that the man was drunk and was being “belligerent.” He then allegedly said that he was frustrated with the man for fighting inside the bar and being verbally aggressive with his date.
An attorney for Marquez wasn’t listed in the court file as of Tuesday morning.
