Taiwan September 2025: Honda (+12.5%), Tesla (+10.2%) highlight weak market (-11.3%)

Honda HR-V sales are up 149.2% in September.

New car sales in Taiwan are off a harsh -11.3% year-on-year in September to just 32,227. The government has taken some measures to try and stop the rot, namely an extension of the NT$50,000 excise tax reduction for trade-ins and the creation of a NT$50,000 excise tax reduction for passenger cars under 2.0L. The Ministry of Finance also announced the proposed extension of the license and excise tax exemptions for electric vehicles until 2030. Year-to-date volumes are down -13.9% to 296,137.

Toyota (-18.8%) is hit hard to 25.9% share vs. 30.4% so far this year, with Tesla (+10.2%) strong at #2 and 7.7% share vs. #8 and 3.5% year-to-date. Honda (+12.5%) also shines and is up two spots on August to #3, downgrading Lexus (-15.2%) to #4. CMC (+1.4%) also defines the market gloom and rounds out the Top 5. All remaining Top 10 members are down, with Hyundai (-1.6%) and Mazda (-4.2%) resisting best, Mitsubishi (-12.3%) matching the market and BMW (-30.9%) and Mercedes (-33.5%) both freefalling.

Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla Cross (+55.1%) surges ahead YoY but falls to 9.4% share vs. 10.8% year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y (+122.9%) is in outstanding shape at 6.6% of the market in 2nd place ahead of the Toyota Yaris Cross (-35.5%). The new CMC J Space is up two ranks on last month to #4 while the Toyota Town Ace (-50.3%), #1 a year ago, is down to #5. Excellent showings also for the Honda HR-V (+149.2%), VW Tiguan (+66%) and Mazda CX-5 (+62.2%).
