Savor the summer a little longer with beachy goods
As much as I look forward to fall, Labor Day Weekend makes me nostalgic for the summer. I’m already starting to miss the vacation time spent with family and friends.
So if I can extend that feeling just a tiny bit more, with things around the house that remind me of the easygoing moments I’ve had over the last few months, I will. I’m talking about vacation-centric, happy-place tokens that evoke memories of leisurely days on the coast — without being overly cutesy.
For starters, candles that subtly smell like the sea and surf. One perfect example is Maison Margiela Paris’s Replica Beach Vibes Scented Candle ($72 on maisonmargiela-fragrances.us). The high-quality wax imbues the air in my home with the same scent as a salty breeze wafting over a hammock on the dunes.
To enhance those hammock vibes, how about a soft-as-can-be pillow, like the Danielle Coastal Beach Blue Linen Decorative Throw Pillow ($125 on kathykuohome.com). It’s an ultra-luxurious, plush thing of beauty, made of feathers and down and covered in a hand-stitched pattern of abstract blue waves.
On a smaller scale, the Blue Mussels Throw Pillow ($32 on cambridgeuncommon.com) is only 8 by 12 inches but packs a solid style punch to any room that could use an oceanside nod. Hooked in blue and cream wool, it features three pretty and sassy little blue mussels.
In the kitchen, linens come into play to inspire cool cooking with the likes of the L’Ocean Bleu Jacquard Kitchen Towel ($30 on gtlinens.com). Its beautifully embroidered, vibrant seafood artwork is woven in multiple blues and greens. And it looks amazing next to fish-shaped platters like the Dori Coastal Beach Beige Stoneware Seabream Serving Platter ($77 on kathykuohome.com). The beige-meets-blue-meets-hazy-purple, 12-inch ceramic dish is made by Casafina, and is ideal for serving — what else? — fish.
Keep the ambiance going in the bathroom with pretty soaps in the hand-blown glass dishes quietly imprinted with sand dollars, made in New England by Simon Pearce. The Sand Dollar Bowl ($50 on simonpearce.com) is a reminder all year of how beautiful the beach can be.
You can bring that I-love-the-beach theme with you courtesy of the Summer Shell Icon Layered Charm Necklace ($49.95 on anthropologie.com). Yes, it will become a little outdated as the fall takes hold, but do yourself a favor and hang it in your closet as a reminder of vacations to come.
