Based on preseason playing time, it appears two Patriots veteran defenders are still trying to earn roster spots.

Safety Kyle Dugger and outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings, two long-time starters on the Patriots’ defense who signed contract extensions just last year, both played into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 20-12 preseason win over the Vikings. Those snaps are usually saved for young roster hopefuls trying crack the 53-man roster or practice squad.

“We only have so many guys,” head coach Mike Vrabel said after the game. “There’s guys that didn’t travel, there’s guys that didn’t play, and we have to have 11 out there every play.

“And so this is the third week of our first training camp as a coaching staff and as a team. That’s what I want everybody to realize. This is the third week of our first year, and we have to get this right.”

Dugger closed out the game with an interception in the end zone, though he almost fumbled. Jennings came away with 2.5 sacks while playing against Vikings third-stringers.

“Anfernee has been around, and again, we’ve had really good conversations,” Vrabel said. “And you try to draft some guys, and there’s some young guys in here, and it’s a fine balance. And to his credit, he’s done nothing but compete in practice, earn reps, earn opportunities in the game, and take advantage of every one that he’s gotten — and in a factor today and even last week.”

The Patriots are installing a new defense under Vrabel and coordinator Terrell Williams, and there’s a question of Dugger and Jennings’ fit within the new scheme.

Since Dugger’s $9.75 salary is guaranteed, the Patriots can only significantly trim cap space by trading him, though that’s made less likely by his high price tag. Only a portion of Jennings’ contract is guaranteed.
