Patriots’ Stefon Diggs muddies up Week 1 status in ACL recovery

EAGAN, Minn. — Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs avoided the PUP list and has been nearly a full-go since Day 1 of training camp, but he’s not making any declarations about his availability in Week 1.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini asked Diggs on her podcast, “Scoop City,” if he’ll be ready for Week 1.

“I feel great. I’m pushing the needle always. I’m always doing more than less. We’ll see about Week 1,” Diggs said. “I don’t know how I feel about it. We’ll see. Coaches aren’t too excited. I’m not too excited. I’m just trying to take a day-by-day. So we’ll see. It looks like we just don’t know where it’s gonna go. Yeah, yeah.”

Russini tried to nail down Diggs’ status, and he deferred to head coach Mike Vrabel.

“I don’t know. It’s up in the air right now,” Diggs said. “You gotta take that up with Coach Vrabel.”

Diggs, at times this training camp, has looked like the perennial 1,000-yard receiver he’s been since 2018. Diggs tore his ACL in late October.

In Wednesday’s joint practice against his former team, the Vikings, he impressed in 1-on-1s and 7-on-7s.

That he was ready for the beginning of training camp was impressive in itself. He’s expected to lead a wide receiver corps that will include DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams. Javon Baker, Efton Chism, Ja’Lyn Polk and Kendrick Bourne are among the Patriots’ other wide receivers competing for roster spots.

Diggs wasn’t active for the Patriots’ preseason opener against the Commanders last week. Vrabel called it a “coach’s decision” on WEEI earlier this week.

He expounded on those comments Wednesday.

“I think the same thing that goes into most every decision, that we just try to communicate with the staff, personnel staff, training staff and see where we are with the player and how much he’s getting — how much work he’s getting at practice, and I think that that volume is good and being able to come back and have a good day in the red zone,” Vrabel said.
“We’re just trying to track what this may look like in the season for veteran players that we have. I think good experience with, just in the end, trying to get each player exactly what they need to be ready for the season, and then also once you get into the season, where things are at week-to-week.”
