Connie Nielsen on playing assassin’s other half in ‘Nobody 2’
Even before “Nobody” became a surprise hit in 2021, Connie Nielsen wanted to know more about her character Becca Mansell’s life with Bob Odenkirk’s professional assassin Hutch.
With Friday’s “Nobody 2,” she gets her wish with an often comical, unremittingly violent sequel centered around the Mansells’ summer vacation.
“Actually,” Nielsen, 60, recalled in a virtual interview, “even as we were starting to do the first one there was always this sense we would be able to continue opening up this story more and more and looking forward to building out Becca’s character.
“So, I was excited when I got the script and saw that they did, in fact, do that.
“They’re starting to unpack that bigger underlying story; all of those secrets that the family was harboring in the first one.”
That doesn’t mean Nielsen can give away plot points – “We are keeping the lid on a lot of that stuff” — but “2” opens many doors “to this other thing that happened.”
“The first one,” she pointed out, “came from a space of this honest take that Bob had: The moment during a break-in in his house where he felt the most vulnerable and powerless in his life. That powerlessness inspired this character of Hutch, in ‘Nobody 1.’
“In the second one, once again family is really the core of this story. But within that, there’s also a question. Because the family is becoming more aware of what it is that he does, there are unintended consequences.
“In ‘Nobody 1’ Bob really uses the fact that his wife is a successful real estate person. She is the one who has the family business at the core. There is a certain wealth, but not too much.
“She’s the part of this family that works and gets stuff done. In the first one that also underscored Bob’s character’s feeling of worthlessness.
“His wife can do everything! But he’s stuck in this dead-end job, and stuck in the fact that he is not expressing his true self.
“I think he is just slightly skewering another masculine malaise. He does it so well, you don’t even notice most of the time.”
Next up for this “Gladiator” veteran: A new “Robin Hood” series where she stars as Eleanor of Aquitaine, a commanding historical figure.
“Yeah, she is a rock star this Queen. She is just unbelievable. In prepping for that period piece the writers and the directors did a lot of work recreating a true 12th century experience to show what was really going on.
“This is 100 years after William the Conqueror invaded England. Into this comes this Queen, born the Duchess of Aquitaine. She becomes, at 16, Queen of France, and then the Queen of England.”
