Police respond to third bomb threat this week on Nantucket’s Main Street
Police and the FBI are investigating the third bomb threat this week on Nantucket’s Main Street.
At 10:29 p.m. on Saturday, an individual called the Nantucket Communication Center claiming they “intended to place an improvised explosive device (IED) at 16 Main Street,” according to a Nantucket Police Department press release.
The building at 16 Main St. is the same location as two previous bomb threats this week and home to a Ralph Lauren store.
The NPD, Massachusetts State Police and Nantucket Fire Department responded to the scene, and with members of the MSP Bomb Squad already on the island for another event, the squad was able to respond immediately.
Responders cleared the scene about an hour later at 11:34 p.m. after a thorough search in which no explosive device was located.
“This was a false report, but we take every threat seriously. We appreciate the quick coordination between all involved agencies, and we thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the response,” the NPD said in a press release.
The first bomb threat this week occurred on Tuesday evening, with an individual calling the Nantucket Communication Center claiming to have an IED in a vehicle near 16 Main St, according to the police. The Nantucket Police and MSP evacuated the scene, and the bomb squad conducted a thorough search. The area was reopened at 11:09 p.m. after the initial call at 7:11 p.m.
In the second incident, on Friday night, the Communication Center received a call reporting an IED in a box at 7:21 p.m., and additional information was received indicating the person with an IED was also armed with a gun. Again, police evacuated the area.
The bomb squad arrived and conducted a thorough search at 10:12 p.m. on Friday, not finding any sign of an explosive, but the Communication Center received another report at 11:13 p.m. of a bomb within the Ralph Lauren store. After an additional search, the bomb squad determined the area safe at 1:09 a.m. early Saturday morning.
The NPD, MSP and FBI are currently investigating the case.
