Parts of the Blue Line will go offline for nine days starting this weekend

The MBTA has issued a reminder for Blue Line riders, warning that the section of the line stretching from Airport to Wonderland will be closed for nine days starting this weekend.

That seven-stop stretch will be closed for more than a week to allow MBTA work crews to upgrade the “special track area” at Orient Heights, resurface “tens of thousands” of feet of track, and replace nearly a thousand feet of rail “as part of the essential infrastructure upgrades, heavy track renewal, and critical revitalization work.”

The maintenance must be done, according to the T, to keep the Blue Line moving at speed.

“If these areas were left unattended, their condition would soon require more speed restrictions, negatively impacting the safety of the system and the commutes of thousands of Blue Line riders,” the MBTA wrote in announcing the closure.

Fare-free shuttle service will be provided at all affected stations, according to the T, and riders who make use of them are advised to give themselves plenty of time to arrive at their destinations.

“For example, a rider traveling to Government Center from Wonderland should budget at least an additional 20 – 30 minutes of travel time in addition to their regular commute,” the MBTA advises.

Train service will continue between Bowdoin Station and Airport, but riders of that section will also need to budget extra time, according to T, with trains scheduled to arrive half as frequently.
