New Hampshire police investigating boy’s death on Lake Winnipesaukee
Police in New Hampshire are investigating the death of a teen boy at Lake Winnipesaukee.
The 17-year-old boy, who as a minor police are not identifying at this time, was on a boat with three women when he became submerged in the water Friday afternoon. He did not resurface.
The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol got the 911 call reporting the incident a little before 12:50 p.m. The agency says that the Gilford Police Department assisted in the response.
According to the police, the boy went into the water in the area of the lake known as the “Broads,” which is near the Diamond and Rattlesnake islands, to retrieve a bag that had gone overboard.
“Due to rough water conditions caused by strong winds, the teen appeared to struggle to swim, eventually submerged, and did not resurface,” according to a statement from the NHSP.
The NHSP Marine Patrol and teams from the Gilford and Alton fire departments made initial searches but could not find the boy. The boy’s body was recovered just after 7 p.m. Thursday by the New Hampshire Fish & Game Dive Unit.
Anyone with any information that can assist the investigation into the boy’s death is asked to contact Sgt. Seth Alie of Marine Patrol by emailing Seth.P.Alie@dos.nh.gov or calling 603-227-2117
