The Nissan X-Trail is up to a record 7th place in Switzerland in March.

New car sales in Switzerland are down another disappointing -7.6% in March to 21,690 units. This means the Q1 volume is off -7.9% to 52,690. 4×4 sales are down -11.4% for the month to 11,191 and 51.6% share vs. 53.9% a year ago and down -11.1% YTD to 26,867 and 51% share vs. 52.8% over Q1 2024. Petrol registrations sink -27.9% to just 5,319 and 24.5% share v. 31.5% last year and are off -27.8% YTD to 13.212 and 25.1% share vs. 32%. Diesel is down -21.5% to 1,607 and 7.4% share vs. 8.7% and off -25.1% YTD to 4,102 and 7.8% share vs. 9.6%. In contrast HEVs soar 13.5% to 8,259 and 38.1% share vs. 31% a year ago and up 11.6% YTD to 19,737 and 37.5% share vs. 30.9%. PHEVs are up 4.5% to 2,083 and 9.6% share vs. 8.5% but down -8.1% YTD to 4,800 and 9.3% share, unchanged. Finally BEVs follow the market at -7.2% to 4,421 and 20.4% share vs. 20.3% but are up 3% YTD to 10,733 and 20.4% share vs. 18.2%.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-11.9%) delivers its first win of the year despite a relatively steep year-on-year loss and ascends to #2 year-to-date. BMW (-10.5%) repeats at #2 and holds onto the Q1 top spot. Leader last month, Skoda (+3.3%) falls to #3 but grows year-on-year. Mercedes (-15%) is in trouble but up one spot month-on-month to #4, exchanging rankings with Audi (+19.2%). Nissan (+66.8%) is the performer of the month and surges 7 ranks on February to #6. Renault (+45.5%), Hyundai (+12.7%) and Dacia (+5.8%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Tesla is back up five spots on last month to #11 but down a damning -65.7% year-on-year.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (-64.6%) still manages to win the month but freefalls on a very dominant year-ago performance. It lifts to #5 year-to-date vs. #13 last month. The Mercedes GLC (+13.1%) is solid at #2 and holds the Q1 pole position. The Audi Q3 (+50.7%) and Nissan Qashqai (+67.5%) both post smashing results below, whereas the VW Tiguan (-21%) surprisingly suffers year-on-year given the presence of a new generation. The Skoda Kodiaq (+29.1%) and even more spectacularly the Nissan X-Trail (+101.2%) impress below. This means the entire Top 7 is composed exclusively of SUVs. Skoda places three models in the Top 9: add the Octavia (-46.6%) at #8 and the Karoq (+25.9%) at #9.
