John Leguizamo makes a connection in ‘Bob Trevino Likes It’
A true life tale that’s so sweetly affecting it seems almost too good to be true, “Bob Trevino Likes It” begins with one Bob but soon finds another.
It originated when writer-director-producer Tracie Laymon searched for her father on the internet, only to launch a life-changing friendship when she accidentally friended a stranger.
Laymon’s film’s story begins with Lily Trevino (“Euphoria” ’s Barbie Ferreira) who is emotionally devastated when her dad exits her life. Online, as she attempts to anonymously “friend” her dad, she meets instead another Robert Trevino (John Leguizamo) who senses her desperation, reaches out to her, without any hidden motives or nefarious schemes.
Both being emotionally vulnerable, they find in this friendship new lives.
“I hadn’t read anything so beautiful and so touching as this script in such a long time,” Leguizamo, 64, said in a Zoom interview. “You know, independent films to me are really where experimentation happens in American cinema.
“Now with movies ‘The Substance’ and ‘Anora’ being such a huge Oscar-winning hit, the indie film hopefully has a shot to come back.”
He clicked with Tracie Laymon in their first meeting. “She’s so vulnerable and such a positive human being and so kind. I was, ‘Oh my God, I gotta work with this woman.’ And she didn’t let me down.
“This movie was such a beautiful experience! With 13 film festival Audience Awards! I’ve never seen that in my life! The reason it touches people is, I think, because you’re seeing two very real people.
“Because there’s so much loneliness in the world right now, I guess due to the digital revolution and everybody being on social media, we’re not interacting as much. There’s a lot of loneliness.
“We see these two lonely people connect, just for the sake of connection. There’s nothing seedy. This guy’s not trying to catfish or hit on her. He’s really looking to fill this hole that he never had a kid. He wants to be a father and nurture someone.
“And to watch Barbie Ferreira who I believe is the breakout star of 2025! To be with her in those scenes and watch that beautifully talented young lady do her thing? That was a gift.”
Having her own life as inspiration Laymon, Leguizamo said, was able to “infuse every scene with some really beautiful detail that makes it come to life.
“You don’t feel like you’ve ever seen in a movie like this. I think that’s because Tracie, like myself, had issues with her dad — and she found a surrogate dad.
“I was always looking for father figures in other people, looking for that ‘father hunger.’ She was lucky. She found somebody.”
