Sports fan Kate Hudson takes the lead in ‘Running Point’

Kate Hudson scores a career-best turn this Thursday in Netflix’s 10-episode “Running Point.”

A sports comedy created by Mindy Kaling, “Running” is inspired – and executive produced by – real-life Los Angeles Lakers’ president and controlling owner Jeanie Buss.

Hudson, 45, is the fictional version, Isla Gordon, whose dysfunctional brothers propel her to the hot seat to take charge of the Los Angeles Waves.

“The most challenging thing for me was managing the balance,” Hudson said in a virtual press conference. “In comedy especially, you’re trying to maintain that balance where the joke’s really important but you actually take the moments to let it breathe and connect.

“Because at the end of the day you want people to fall in love with these characters as much as they are as for the humor and making this really sing.

“Because we had such a nice connection, all of us, those moments of love and connectivity really shine through in the series.”

Hudson – her parents are Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn – grew up loving sports. “Sports are like my cozy blanket. I just love watching sports. All of it. I come from a baseball family, so a lot of baseball.  A lot of hockey in our family.  But I love football, basketball.

“I’m one of those people who wake up in the middle of the night and if I ever feel anxiety, I put on a sports show, because it just feels cozy.

“That has to do a lot with growing up with only boys in a very sporty family.”

As for getting laughs at the antics that surround a major franchise, Hudson noted how helpful it was having Buss onboard while filming.

“Just to have her insight! Jeanie Buss, the president. The first woman to be running a big franchise basketball team. Her whole take was, This just lends itself to so much comedy. Because it’s like she always says, ‘You can’t write it.’ But you can.

“So, it’s nice to have her as our grounding.”

Hudson connected with the underdog story that is “Running Point,” a woman raising her voice and finding her power.

“I have been raising my voice and trying to find my power since I was little. It’s just what it is when you grow up with boys. You have to scream over everything because they just aren’t listening.

“For the show, Mindy did a good job of having that happen right off the bat. So you know Isla, amidst a lot of uphill battles, has the ability to make her own choices.

“That first deal she does shows that there’s the capacity to lead, and now Isla needs to find her feet and her confidence.”

“Running Point” streams on Netflix Feb. 27
