Karen Read defense attorney Alan Jackson in hot seat for today’s hearing
Karen Read defense attorney Alan Jackson will have to answer today for some ethical concerns leveled against him by special prosecutor Hank Brennan last week.
“The Commonwealth just provided the Court with information that causes me grave concern. The implications of that information may have profound effects on this defense and defense counsel,” Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly J Cannone said at the hearing last Tuesday. “So, for that reason I’m going to suspend today so that when we meet again to address these issues, all affected will be appropriately prepared.”
Read, 44, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. She’s accused of killing Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, her boyfriend of about two years at the time, on Jan. 29, 2022.
The hearing began at 11 a.m.
“Counsel should be prepared to address issues related to Defendant’s recent production pursuant to Rule 14, especially as the materials produced relate to prior representations made to the Court on the record by defense counsel concerning the ARCCA witnesses,” Cannone wrote in a Thursday “notice to appear” for the hearing.
Defense attorney Robert Alessi, who joined the team after the last trial, is taking the reins of arguing the team’s interactions with the ARCCA witnesses ahead of and during the trial. He said that his presentation and report will document the “chronology” of the team’s interactions with the ARCCA experts, which he believes will “illuminate and elucidate” Cannone’s concerns about eithical dealings.
Two experts with ARCCA, LLC, Daniel Wolfe and Andrew Rentschler, testified in the previous trial that O’Keefe could not have been struck by Read’s Lexus as the prosecution contends.
This is a developing story.
