Holland boys return to the top of BCL with 71-49 win over Boston English

The Holland School of Technology is once again atop the Boston City League.

Ian Piper scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds while Gerald Banks added 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Albert D. Holland School of Technology captured the Boston City League boys basketball title with a 71-49 win over Boston English on Thursday afternoon at Madison Park High School.

The win gives the Bulldogs their third Boston City League championship in four years. Piper was named to the all-tournament team for his performance, while Banks was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

“English played a 2-3 zone which we knew they would do coming in and we needed a middle guy to relieve that and Ian stepped up in that role,” said Bulldogs coach Joe Chatman. “He is more than capable of knocking down those shots and he did that.”

Both teams played a 2-3 zone while the Bulldogs applied relentless full-court pressure.

A season ago, Charlestown overcame a 16-point second quarter deficit to defeat the Bulldogs for a city championship before going on to win the Div. 3 state title. Chatman is hoping this time around it’s the Bulldogs who are propelled to better days as they enter the Division 4 tournament.

“We have not thought anything since those two losses – the one against Charlestown and then the Bourne game in the tournament that eliminated us,” Chatman said. “We’ve had it on our minds all spring, summer, and fall. This win is something we accomplished along the way. Now we have to finish it off.”

On the heels of 16 points from Piper, the Bulldogs (17-3) held a 37-25 lead at the intermission. English tried to hang around and four points from Darvens Alcime trimmed the deficit to 42-34 with just over four minutes to play in the third. The Bulldogs, however, turned on the jets.

Piper finished in transition and then Yassine Amghar splashed a triple before coming up with a steal and bucket to stretch the lead to 49-36. Ahead 55-39 heading into the final stanza, the Bulldogs extinguished any hopes of an Eagles comeback. Kamron Gordon connected at the rim off a feed from Amghar and moments later Amghar found Camilo Arno for a triple to put the Bulldogs up 65-41.

“English did a great job with our pressure in the first half but then started turning it over in the second half,” Chatman said. “That’s just fatigue. It’s not the opposing team’s skill, it’s just hard for them to maintain that speed that we want to play at.”
