Glam standouts on SNL Anniversary red carpet

Even after all of last week’s runway action at New York Fashion Week, this past weekend gave us a bonus round of unexpected glam — also straight from the Big Apple — courtesy of “Saturday Night Live” ’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.  A-listers from across the Hollywood spectrum came out in droves — as did a bevy of huge names in music. And all of them were more than ready to dress up for the red carpet.

Boston’s own Ayo Edebri wore rising American designer Coleen Allen — a perfectly fitted black dress that flattered her every curve. Meanwhile, one of my favorite fashion-meets-comedy moments of the evening came when Emma Stone stunned in a delicate red halter-neck gown by Louis Vuitton with side pockets — that she’d cheekily stuffed with popcorn.

Blake Lively was looking splendid in a Tamara Ralph gown with a plunging neckline and a figure-hugging cut. Her strappy heels, diamonds, and tumbling hair set the silver gown off perfectly. It was a look echoed elsewhere in the night by Kim Kardashian’s equally silver and equally fitted bodycon Balenciaga dress. Speaking of sparkle, Sabrina Carpenter dazzled in a full-length sequined column dress.

Anya Taylor-Joy was a vision in vintage — a 1995 Thierry Mugler ready-to-wear gold satin peplum jacket and black fitted skirt. And I loved Jenna Ortega’s choice: a chocolate brown Monse ready-to-wear gown with a plunging neckline and halter top. It was an excellent choice for winter, with its deeply rich hue and sassy attached scarf, none of which sacrificed anything on the glamour front.

Dakota Johnson, too, went all in on glamour — with some amount of edge. She took Gucci’s signature horsebit hardware to a sexy level with a high-slit, one-shoulder Gucci gown. And she showed the whole thing off with high Gucci sandals and gold Sidney Garber hoop earrings. Not to be outdone, Natasha Lyonne’s Rodarte 2024 gown went in an equally sexy direction; the lace-and-silk number subtly nodded to lingerie.

And then there were the SNL stars themselves, who didn’t hold back on the red carpet one bit.  Maya Rudolph was a vision in a bright sapphire custom-made Gabriela Hearst one-shouldered gown — and fellow SNL cast member Heidi Gardner was resplendent in a silver sequined Markarian frock, incorporating florals and a yellow ombre hem and spaghetti straps. And cast member Ego Nwodim’s silver and black lace Marc Jacobs 2024 ready-to-wear dress amounted to a literal shining moment.
