Doherty’s hat trick keeps Hingham unbeaten
HINGHAM – Three goals from Caroline Doherty helped the Hingham girls hockey team win 4-2 over Westwood in the Hingham Showcase Tournament.
Both teams entered with undefeated records and Hingham entered with the top rank in Division 1; Westwood was No. 1 in Division 2. Harborwomen head coach Courtney Turner said the Wolverines were a challenge for her squad and that the Harborwomen had to adjust their playing style.
“We thought it was going to be a big test,” Turner said. “They played a really tough, physical game and we weren’t really used to that, so we had to change up our game plan.”
It was also a special night for senior Addy Garrity, who registered her 28th point of the season and the 100th of her career. She joined Doherty as active Harborwomen with 100 career points and said that reaching the milestone was a culmination of the work she put into improving her game throughout her career.
“I think it’s a big accomplishment,” Garrity said. “Looking back at freshman and sophomore year, it was about building off of everything and getting better every year.”
The opening period featured zero goals, although Hingham junior Katie Teague scored one that was disallowed. Westwood flashed an aggressive, physical style and Turner said her team needed to learn from it.
“They came out flying, they were buzzing,” Turner said. “We needed a little bit of a reality check.”
Hingham was a different team in the third period, firing 11 shots on net and scoring twice. The first came on the power play when Garrity fed the puck to Doherty at the top of the circle and Doherty rifled it in.
This was where Garrity secured her 100th point, which Turner said was something that showed how important the senior is to the team’s offense.
“It’s an awesome feat to get 100 points, it doesn’t happen often,” Turner said. “Addy is a really big contributor to our offense. She’s there making plays and it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
Hingham would make it 2-0 when Callie Crean fired the puck past Westwood goaltender Jennifer Linn. However, Westwood was able to cut the deficit to one in the final minute of the period when Kate Sullivan finished a rebound shot.
Hingham came out hot once again in the third period and Doherty added her second and third of the day to round out the scoring. Margaret Ash scored late to give Westwood some life but Hingham goaltender Izzi Puleo was able to shut the door.
“We were hyping this game up a lot,” Garrity said. “Honestly, I don’t think that D1 or D2 matters that much. If you are No. 1 in any division, it means that you are beating everyone else. We knew that that was what it was going to be going into it. We wanted to show that we were going to be the team that was still undefeated.”
The Harborwomen will continue the showcase on Tuesday when they take on Lincoln-Sudbury and will finish the regular season on Thursday against defending Division 1 champion St. Mary’s. As the team looks to the playoffs, Garrity said these final matchups will be crucial.
“Every game we have going forward is going to build us up,” Garrity said. “We are going to keep on focusing on moving forward and being our best. We don’t want to peak anywhere; we want to keep going up.”
