Massachusetts Winter Storm Warning: Ice, crashing temperatures expected after snow

After residents across most of the Bay State wake up to several inches of snow on the ground, meteorologists say the weather is going to take a turn for the worse Sunday as ice accumulates and winds pick up.

Winter storm warnings and advisories that went into effect Saturday afternoon will remain in place through Sunday evening at 7 as meteorologists urged caution if you’re looking to get out on the roads.

“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause power outages,” the National Weather Service’s Boston office said Saturday. “Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible.”

Meteorologists anticipated that areas across northern Massachusetts, especially along and north of Route 2, would receive about four to eight inches of snow, with rates coming down at half an inch to an inch per hour overnight.

Areas south of Route 2 to the South Coast were expected to receive two to six inches of snow.

“Temperatures at the surface along the coastal plain will quickly warm above freezing around sunrise tomorrow morning, allowing sleet to change over to rain with minimal freezing rain concerns,” the NWS said in its forecast discussion.

“Further west across the interior,” it added, “especially in low spots across the high terrain, cold air will struggle to scour out. This will lead to possibly several hours of freezing rain, where ice accumulation of trace to .35 inches is possible.”

The combination of the heavy wet and freezing rain could lead to issues on trees and power lines, with isolated power outages expected by Sunday afternoon which “could become more widespread as strong winds enter the region with an approaching cold front.”

Temperatures that could reach the 40s during the day Sunday are likely to take a nose dive across the region as winds pick up, making it “feel even colder than it is, with wind chills in the single digits into the negatives, especially towards the interior.”

The windy conditions could bring wind chills as low as -15 Monday night, meteorologists warned.
