John Snyder (21 saves) backbones Arlington win over Woburn
WOBURN — It took a little while for Arlington to find its game on Saturday, but once the Spy Ponders did, they played spoilers on Woburn’s senior night.
Overcoming a sluggish first period, Arlington ripped off the game’s final four goals while netminder John Snyder turned in a sterling 21-save performance in a 4-1 boys hockey win at O’Brien Arena.
“We were able to weather the storm in the first period and did a great job of holding them down after that,” Arlington coach John Messuri said.
The Tanners’ (12-5-1) high-flying offense was on full display in the first period as they had Arlington hemmed in for long stretches of play. They outshot the Spy Ponders, 11-2, in the opening 15 minutes, but Snyder kept his team in the game.
The only damage Woburn could do came midway through the period when Kurt Beck was sent off for tripping. Matt Hughes was able to corral a Jack McEleney rebound and fire it inside the left post at 6:51.
Arlington needed something to get it going and that chance came when it went on the power play in the final seconds of the first, eventually carrying 1:54 of that time into the second.
After being held to just the two shots in the first, Arlington matched that total right off the jump in the second. Then, with time just about up on the man advantage, JP Messuri’s shot deflected off Nolan Russell’s shin and past Adam Gerry to tie the game.
“That goal was the jump we needed,” Messuri said. “And we were able to carry it from there.”
Just over six minutes later, Arlington nosed in front as Beck went to the front of the goal and tipped Evan Sparks’ centering pass over Gerry’s shoulder for a 2-1 lead.
The Tanners had a golden chance to get back even late in the period thanks to a 36-second two-man advantage but Arlington was able to kill it off and carry a one-goal lead into the third.
Arlington’s defense had done a great job in the first two periods of shackling Woburn’s dynamic scoring duo of McEleney and Jack Lee and that kept up in the third where the Spy Ponders surrendered only four shots.
Cam Petrillo gave Arlington some breathing room early in the third with a one-timer from the top of the crease at 3:41.
Just over a minute later, Woburn’s comeback chances were dealt a death blow when Beck scored his second of the afternoon to make it a 4-1 game.
From there, the Arlington defense kept the clamps on and cruised home to the victory.
