The Spoonful: Remembering Curtis LeMair, the 1978 Port Bunge explosion and a new grocery store
The Spoonful is a weekly roundup of big stories from across the southwest metro.
Here are some stories that made headlines in the last week:
Man in case where Eden Prairie police officer lied is released from prison
Eden Prairie Police Officer Travis Serafin lied in a search warrant and was a primary witness in the testimony that led to Timothy Martin Holmes’ May sentencing in connection to drug overdoses. A judge accepted the withdrawal of the dealer’s guilty plea in a Hennepin County courtroom Oct. 25. The discovery of the lies leads to over 30 cases being dismissed or having convictions vacated and expunged.
Plymouth Hy-Vee opens next Tuesday
Plymouth is getting a large addition this week. A new Hy-Vee will open at the former site of a Cub Foods store on Tuesday. The 56,000-square-foot store will offer a Hibachi Asian grill, made-to-order sushi, a pharmacy and health clinic and a Hy-Vee Market Grill Express. When fully staffed, it will employ about 400 people.
Not just a wrestler: ‘Going to be missed by all’
Our sports reporter Tom Schardin came out with a piece last week about Prior Lake High School standout athlete Curtis LeMair, who died in his sleep while at college at Northern State University in South Dakota earlier this month. LeMair’s funeral was Oct. 22 and long-time Prior Lake wrestling coach Joe Block said he’s had some tough days in his coaching career, but none tougher than the day LeMair was laid to rest. Tom collected plenty of reactions from family and friends who loved LeMair, which you can find in the story.
Remembering deadly Savage grain elevator explosion on the 40th anniversary

The Savage Fire Department recently held its first official debriefing of the situation inviting first-responders from that day to share insight with younger firefighters and learn about new safety developments.
