One more honor for Prior Lake senior

Matt Arends picked up one more award on his way out of Prior Lake High School.

The senior was presented with the Joe Tousignant Award, which goes to the outstanding senior male scholar-athlete at Prior Lake. The award recognizes Arends’ accomplishments in the classroom and in athletic competition.

Arends’ academic highlights:

4.105 GPA, and is in the top 2% of the class
Four-Year Board Scholar
Freshman and sophomore Class President; three years student council
Congressional Appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point
Four-year Distinguished Academic Achievement Award from the Minnesota State High School League

Arends’ athletic highlights:

Four-year varsity starter in baseball; three times all-conference
All-Section 2AAA pick in baseball, junior year
Team captain in baseball senior year, team MVP and best hitter award
Three-year varsity starter on offense and defense in football
First-ever two-time captain for football
Three times all-conference in football and South Suburban Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2011
Associated Press First Team All-State, KARE 11 All-Metro Team, Star Tribune All-Metro Team, Minnesota Vikings All-State Team
First Team Academic All-State

Arends, who will play Division I football next year in the Ivy League at Princeton University, will play his final high school game June 30 in the 39th annual Minnesota High School All-Star Football game at Husky Stadium at St. Cloud State University at 1 p.m.

Arends is part of the south roster, listed as a defensive back.

Arends finished seventh for Prior Lake in tackles last fall with 60, helping the team earn its first-ever state tournament berth by winning the Section 3AAAAA crown. The 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pounder was a big hitter from his strong safety spot and a big reason why the Lakers’ defense was so stout during the conference season and in the section playoffs.

Arends was also a factor on offense, playing receiver and carrying the ball at times. He caught a team-best 33 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns. He also had two rushing scores.
