Hotel proposal under review

The proposal to build a 58-room boutique hotel on prime real estate in Excelsior is being reviewed by city commissions.

The Planning Commission met June 28 to discuss the request for site plan review, design standards review and a height variance.

Conversation ended at the meeting without a recommendation for approval.

“They just had a lot of discussion,”?said City Manager Kristi Luger.

Neil Weber, representing Thomas James Properties, filed an application to build a 58-room hotel, with a restaurant, ballroom on the roof level, retail space on Water Street and underground parking.

The James family has owned the land on the corner of Lake and Water streets for more than 30 years. For many years it was the site of a Pizza Hut. The building was demolished in June because it was deemed a hazard.

In his application to the city, Weber said he hopes to create an increased sense of ambiance.

“The building needs to create interest, respect history and provide a needed service to the community,” stated Weber in his application.

Weber hopes to use brick and stone for the exterior, with a copper roof.

The building, at 10 Water St., would be more than 55 feet tall, according to the city’s method for measuring height.

The city’s code limits building height in the area to 35 feet, which tripped the project’s need for a height variance.

In addition to the Planning Commission review, the Heritage Preservation Commission also is reviewing the project.

The Heritage Preservation Commission discussed the proposal at its June 22 meeting but delayed a decision until its July 20 meeting at 7 p.m.

The commission asked Weber to provide additional information and material samples to review.

The Planning Commission will pick up the issue again at a meeting also scheduled for July 20. The meeting is expected to begin at 5 p.m.
