Chard earns Aberdeen reconstruction job
Chard Tiling & Excavation earned the reconstruction job on Aberdeen Avenue with a bid of slightly more than $113,000 – about $1,000 lower than the city engineer’s cost estimate and at least $8,000 lower than any other contractor bid on the project.
Last month, the Jordan City Council asked for bids to resurface and reclaim the main road between Jordan Public Schools and the newer neighborhoods of south Jordan. The council directed that the reconstruction occur in 2012, instead of next year as originally proposed.
The project spans a stretch of Aberdeen Avenue (County Road 61), from Old Highway 169 (County Road 66) to Sunset Drive.
Six bids were received, and Chard offered the lowest responsible bid, gaining council approval.
City Engineer Tim Loose suggests budgeting for 5 percent extra, a typical precaution meant to cover “quantity overruns during construction so as not to delay or constrain necessary work that is encountered,” he wrote in a memorandum.
“Chard Tiling & Excavating Inc. is a reputable contractor with previous similar experience in the city of Jordan, as well as other neighboring communities,” Project Engineer Mike Waltman wrote in a letter to City Administrator Ed Shukle last Wednesday, June 13.
Chard completed reclamation on Sunset Drive, near Jordan Middle School, last summer.
Reclamation is a process by which a contractor reuses existing road materials by grinding them up and reinstalling them under a layer of new roadway. It is not an expansion project.
Bolton & Menk Inc., Waltman and Loose’s firm, recommended Chard “based on their experience and acceptable bid prices,” Waltman wrote.
