Wollin sparks Blazers to 8-3 start
Litchfield native Jamie Wollin is the leading rebounder for the women’s basketball team at the College of St. Benedict.
Wollin is averaging 5.5 rebounds per game for the Blazers, who are 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Wollin – a 2009 Litchfield High School graduate – had her best game of the year in a 65-53 win Dec. 3 over Carleton.
She finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals in the win.
For the season Wollin is averaging 5.5 points, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
“For three or four years now, she’s been one of our most consistent players,” St. Benedict coach Mike Durbin told the St. Cloud Times. “There’s always something in her box score that jumps out at you. She’s always been a great rebounder. She never gives up on a ball. And she’s always been a very capable scorer as well. That’s an area she worked hard on this offseason and you can see those results.”
* Litchfield native Michael Bruesewitz is a senior on the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team.
Bruesewitz – a 6-foot, 6-inch, 223-pound forward – is averaging 7.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game for the Badgers.
Bruesewitz scored 12 points and added eight rebounds in the Badgers’ 60-51 win over Penn State in the Big Ten opener Jan. 3.
He finished with 11 points and nine rebounds in Wisconsin’s 77-70 win Nov. 24 over Arkansas.
Wisconsin is 11-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Bruesewitz has played in 111 career games and made 59 starts with the Badgers, averaging 4.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for his four-year career.
Bruesewitz competed at LHS in 2006-2007 before playing his final two seasons at Henry Sibley High School.
* Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School grad Micah Larson is 13-4 wrestling at 197 pounds for Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
Larson – a redshirt junior – has won six of his last seven matches by fall and has seven pins overall.
The Mustangs are 7-0 overall in dual meets this season.
SMSU returns from its holiday break to compete at the 23rd annual Tracy Borah Duals Saturday in Gunnison, Colo.
The Mustangs wrestle Colorado Mesa, California Baptist, Western State (Colo.) and Colorado State-Pueblo.
* Litchfield’s Kjerstin Meyer is a member of the women’s novice rowing team at the University of Minnesota.
The 2012 graduate competed in two rowing events for the Gophers in October.
Meyer will travel to San Diego, Calif., later this month for a week of training with the varsity rowing team.
* Litchfield junior Tyler Jones won his 100th career varsity wrestling match Dec. 21.
Jones reached the milestone while going 3-0 in a quadrangular against Zimmerman, Albany and Princeton at Zimmerman High School.
Jones is the 20th Litchfield wrestler to reach the 100-win plateau, joining Tim Kinsella, Nathan Turck, Joe Buschette, Erik Drange, Bryar Johnson, A.J. Werner, Erik Flowers, Justin Gabrielson, Mark Twardy, Mike Harper, Travis Gottschalk, Jake Ziegler, Matt Forster, Scott Shepersky, Jim Soine, Jerry Block, Joe Ziegler and Cory Schlack.
Beau Penk is the only Dragon wrestler to surpass 200 wins with a school-record 235 victories.
