Skaters fall short of first winning streak
The Prior Lake girls hockey team was trying for its first-ever winning streak under second-year coach Todd Johnson.
But the Lakers let a two-goal lead get away in the final four minutes of the game and then lost 5-4 in overtime at Apple Valley Dec. 8 in South Suburban Conference action.
Prior Lake (2-8 overall) went into the game off a 1-0 league victory at over Eastview Dec. 6, which snapped a four-game losing streak. The loss to Apple Valley dropped the Lakers to 1-3 in conference play.
The loss was also the first game the Lakers couldn’t win when scoring at least three goals dating back to last year. Prior Lake (5-19-2 overall last winter) was 4-0 when it reaching three goals a year ago and was 1-0 this season.
The good news is the Lakers are getting a little more offense this year, despite the .250 winning percentage. Prior Lake was shutout 14 times in 21 games last season. It’s been blanked twice so far this year, both in conference play (4-0 at Burnsville and 7-0 at No. 8-ranked Lakeville North).
Against Apple Valley, sophomore Keely Totenhagen scored her second goal of the season 3:34 into the third period to put Prior Lake up 4-2. Sophomores Andrea Citrowske and Lindsey Harris had the assists on the power-play goal.
But Erica Power saved the game for Apple Valley. She sscored with 3:59 left to play and tallied again 38 seconds later to tie the game. Power also assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime, which came 1:11 into the extra session to finish with two goals and two assists.
The Lakers were outshot 37-17, including 12-2 in the third period. Junior Lexi Brandt finished with 32 saves in goal.
Harris had a second-period goal, which came at the 13:51 mark to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Junior Bailey Halstrom and ninth-grader Emmie Schweitzer each had first-period goals for Prior Lake, scoring 1:18 apart to give the team a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.
Citrowske ended up with two assists, while Totenhagen, sophomore Brooke Baker and juniors Brooke Ranagan and Allison Muller each had one assist.
Through 10 games, Citrowske leads the Lakers in points with six (2 goals, 4 assists), while Harris has five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Halstrom (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ranagan (1 goal, 3 assists) each have four points.
Four players are tied with three points: seventh-grader Katie Huntington (2 goals, 1 assist), junior Laura Emory (2 goals, 1 assist), Baker (1 goal, 2 assists) and Totenhagen (2 goals, 1 assist).
Brandt has started eight games and has a 3.37 goals-against average with one shutout and .908 save percentage.
The Lakers are back on the ice Thursday, Dec. 13 at Bloomington Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. The Jaguars are 7-2 (3-2 in league play). Prior Lake stays on the road Dec. 15 playing at No. 9 Lakeville South at 2:45 p.m.
