Interface: Band students reflect on playing at state inauguration
Editor’s note: The following submission is written by Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools students Madisen Clemensen and Alivia Hall.
The Prior Lake High School Wind Ensemble had the pleasure and honor of performing at the inauguration of our state officials on Monday, Jan. 7. Preparing for this event presented challenges as well as excitement. Students performed 20 minutes of pre-ceremony music and during the procession of educators.
Having about only two weeks to prepare and solidify the music meant this event proved to be a learning experience as well as a lifelong memory that will remain a proud moment for the Prior Lake Band Program.
Alivia Hall:
Performing at the inauguration of our state officials was unlike anything I have ever done. It was one of the most awe-inspiring and amazing experiences I have ever had the honor of participating in. Leading up to the performance, it felt so surreal that we had been asked to perform at such a historic event.
The inauguration inspired myself and many other students to engage in political conversations of our own, allowing us to practice our rights and engage in American government. It was truly an experience I and all other participants will never forget.
Madisen Clemensen:
Performing at the inauguration of our state officials represents one of the greatest honors that I have ever had the privilege of participating in. When I was first informed that we had been chosen for this great honor, my heart swelled with joy and pride, invigorated at the excitement of playing before some of the most notable Minnesotan politicians of our time. I have always admired our state politicians and actively engage in political discussion in addition to exercising my right to vote. It was therefore an immense and humbling privilege for me to be able to take part.
Intertwining the worlds of music and politics proved especially magical to me, most notably because I was able to with the aid of my fellow band members and two outstanding band directors, whom I will miss dearly when I graduate this year. I believe that I speak for the entire band as well as myself when I say the inspiring experience of performing at the inauguration of our state officials is a memory that I will cherish for years to come.
