SOFTBALL: Rocori’s ace stifles Hutch sluggers

The Hutchinson softball team’s high-scoring offense met its match Monday when the Tigers lost 3-0 to the Rocori Spartans for their first loss of the season.

It was a battle of undefeated teams as the Tigers were 4-0 going into the game and the Spartans were 3-0. Hutch was averaging a little more than 13 runs per game, but Rocori’s ace, Megan Gavin, held them to just two hits in the shut out.

According to Hutch manager Melanie Strachota, Gavin is a senior with an 18-1 career record, and her rise pitch frustrated the Tigers all day long as they kept swinging under it. Hutch flew out 10 times and only grounded out twice.

Allie Fauth had both of Hutch’s hits in the game, but the Tigers never got a runner past second base.

On the mound for Hutch, Shelby Mohr and Grace Penke had a solid combined effort to allow just three runs off six hits. Normally that would give the Tigers a great chance to win, but with the offense stumped there was nothing they could do.

The Tigers (4-1) were also scheduled to play New Prague Tuesday, but that was postponed due to rain. Their next game is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday when they host Waconia, weather permitting.
