Council to hear second reading of water, sewer rate increase

The International Falls City Council is scheduled to hear the second reading of an ordinance that will increase water and sewer rates when it meets Monday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Falls Municipal Building. An agenda is considered tentative until the government body begins the meeting and makes additions or deletions to the proposed agenda. The council offers an opportunity for public comment at the beginning of each regular meeting and concludes with reports by administration, department heads and members of the council.

The council Nov. 19 approved the first reading of the ordinance that will show an increase of five percent for both resident and nonresident rates in each of 2013, 2014, and 2015.

The current rate for a resident is $17.40 for the 2,000 gallon minimum. That rate will increase to $18.27 in 2013, $19.18 in 2014 and $20.14 in 2015. The current rates for nonresidents is $20.88 for the 2,000 gallon minimum. That rate will increase to $21.92 in 2013, $23.02 in 2014 and $24.17 in 2015.

In addition, sewer rates will increase from the current $20.88 for the 2,000 gallon minimum in increments to $24.17 for the same amount in 2015.

The sewer rate increase exceeds 5 percent due to a pass through of costs from the sewer district and essentially doubles the rate per 1,000 gallons.

The council is expected to seek bids for remodeling the city’s administration office when it meets Monday.

Also Monday, the council is scheduled to discuss creating an honorary council member position and to hear a recommendation from its Human Resources Committee to adopt a code of conduct.

The committee is also expected to recommend approval of 2013 salaries for non-contract employees.
