Bronco girls hockey team shoots down Bears

In what looked like the polar opposite of the season-opening loss against Roseau, the International Falls girls hockey team kept the puck primarily on the opposition’s side of the ice Monday night at Bronco Arena.

The Falls outshot Lake of the Woods, 56-3, en route to shutting out the Bears, 13-0.

“I think a lot of it was just that we were a lot quicker and stronger and faster, and we got all the loose pucks,” said Broncos head coach Gerald Bolstad. “(Lake of the Woods) is a little bit down right now, and eventually, hopefully, they’ll be back.

“I thought our effort was good, and that was the biggest thing I got out of it. I think we worked hard, and that was good.”

One statistic Lake of the Woods led the Falls in was in penalties. The Bears committed 10 2-minute minors, compared to just two for the Broncos.

Following a Lake of the Woods penalty in the first minute of the game, the Falls scored its first goal 1:12 into the first period on a power play when junior forward Hillary Fox scored assisted by Amy Auran and Rebekah Ford.

The Broncos gave the impression early in Monday night’s game that it would be a given for them to score on the power play against the Bears. The Falls already recorded its five power-play goal for the evening with just under 4 minutes left in the second period.

The first-period score of 3-0 in favor of the Broncos seemed close in comparison to the rest of the game. Ford added a goal and Auran scored on the power play in what was the first of a hat trick for her to close out the period.

Falls scored six times in the second period. Sophomore forward Jenna Anderson was assisted by Lexi Edwards and Clara Palm for the goal 5:18 into the period.

The Broncos then scored three consecutive power-play goals coming from Auran, Katie West and Amber Tilander.

Falls closed out the second period in front, 9-0, with the first of senior forward Jordan Bright’s two goals for the evening coming unassisted and Auran completing the hat trick on an assist by Anderson.

The running time in the final 17 minutes didn’t stop the Broncos from scoring four more times with goals coming from Fox, Bright, Tessa Walls and Edwards.

Keanna Carlson recorded the shutout in goal for the Broncos facing only three shots, one in each period. Lake of the Woods goalie Emily Ney made 43 saves.

The win was the third straight this season for the Falls, which improved to 3-1.

The Broncos return to action next Tuesday when they host Fort Frances, prior to road games against Proctor/Hermantown and Hibbing.

“We’ve got some big games coming up,” Bolstad said. “I think what we got out of this (game Monday night) is I think the kids realize you’ve got to work hard to have success. I think we did that, and I think we moved the puck pretty good.”
