Light snow and slick roads possible Wednesday night, but a bigger system ahead

The snowflakes began falling here and there on Wednesday afternoon in the Twin Cities, with a bit more predicted to follow.

“Plan for a potentially slick evening commute!” the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service reported on Wednesday.

Although the Twin Cities is not expected to get much accumulation — perhaps less than 1 inch — conditions could vary in the wider region.

“Locations north of I-94 have the best chance for accumulating snow, while freezing drizzle is possible across southern Minnesota,” the weather service reported.

After a reprieve, more snow is expected to roll into the Twin Cities on Friday night, with heavy snow on Saturday before gradually clearing and turning sunny on Sunday.

“A potent storm system is expected for late Friday night through Saturday,” the weather service predicted in a hazardous weather outlook, “with accumulating snow likely. Travel impacts are expected.”
