Celtics rule out starter, key reserve for home matchup with Rockets

The Celtics did not exit their four-game West Coast swing unscathed.

Ahead of its first game back at TD Garden on Monday night, Boston ruled out starting guard Derrick White (left shin contusion) and rotation wing Sam Hauser (right hip impingement). Big man Al Horford was upgraded from questionable to available for the home matchup with the Houston Rockets.

The timing of the injuries was unfortunate for White and Hauser, as both were coming off positive performances. White scored 23 points, including 16 in the third quarter, in Saturday’s win over the Dallas Mavericks, snapping out of a prolonged shooting slump. Hauser, who’s battled lower back issues and 3-point inefficiency throughout the season, is 12-for-20 from three over his last four games.

It was the third DNP of the season for White and the eighth for Hauser.

The Rockets ruled out wing Cam Whitmore (illness) and have been without starting forward Jabari Smith Jr. since Smith fractured his hand earlier this month. Amen Thompson and Tari Eason, who both missed the first Celtics-Rockets game on Jan. 3, both were available for Houston.

After losing to Boston 109-86, the Rockets won eight of their next 10 games, including back-to-back victories over the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers last Wednesday and Saturday.
