Mike Vrabel details what he looks for in a future Patriots wide receiver

New head coach Mike Vrabel seemed very self-aware in his assessment of the Patriots’ roster Monday during his introductory press conference, questioning if the team is good enough to take advantage of “bad football.”

One major area of weakness on the Patriots’ roster is at wide receiver. Vrabel described what he looks for in the position Tuesday on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

“Receivers that have great catch radius, that can create separation, that are good against contested catches,” Vrabel said. “Because when you’re contested and PBUs go up in the air, then they get intercepted, right? And then that now that leads to turnovers, which then changes field position and all these things.”

Vrabel was asked about one of his former players, Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, on the show Tuesday morning.

It might be difficult to pry Brown away from the Eagles, but it sounds like Vrabel maintains contact with his former wideout. Brown was drafted by the Titans when Vrabel was head coach in 2019. He was traded to the Eagles for a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

“I’m proud of his development, his personal development, and working on himself, and working on controlling his — and getting back to center,” Vrabel said of Brown. “He’s a passionate player, and I love him to death, and I have a very, very close relationship with him.”
