NOPE’easter: Massachusetts should only see some light snow as storm passes to the south

If you were dreaming of being snowed in this weekend, you’ll have to keep praying to the snow gods for a nor’easter later this winter.

The whopper of a winter storm will be passing well to New England’s south on Saturday, as local meteorologists predict only some light snow for the region.

Most spots will see a half an inch to an inch of snow, with some localized 2-inch amounts.

“No big deal,” Andy Nash, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Thursday. “It will be very light snow.”

There had been lots of talk about a possible monster nor’easter for the weekend.

But the low-pressure system that was possibly threatening to bury New England in heavy snow will pass well to the south due to the northern stream energy.

The northern stream energy in the upper levels of the atmosphere will still bring the light accumulation of snow on Saturday.

Ahead of the light snow, dry and sunny weather is on tap for Friday as temps moderate a bit along with less wind.

Breezy conditions (gusts of 25 to 35 mph) will continue in the morning before diminishing in the afternoon. Temps could even get close to 40.

“It will feel downright mild compared to what it’s been,” Nash said.

Then after Saturday’s snow, dry conditions and seasonable temps in the upper 30s return on Sunday. Winds will be calm. Monday looks like it will be a similar day as Sunday.

Temps should trend a bit colder for midweek, but there is some uncertainty on when the cold front will move through.

Temps on Tuesday have trended warmer in the mid to upper 30s, but could end up in the low 30s if the cold front moves through quicker. Wednesday looks more likely to be colder, with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
