NBA Cup scenarios: What Celtics need to clinch spot in quarterfinals
The Celtics kept themselves in contention for the NBA Cup with their 138-129 win over the Chicago Bulls on Friday.
But to book a spot in the knockout rounds, they’ll now need two other games to break in their favor.
Boston finished NBA Cup group play with a 3-1 record, a +23 point differential and a second-place finish in Eastern Conference Group C (behind Atlanta). The East’s other two groups will be decided on Tuesday when the Orlando Magic host the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks visit the Detroit Pistons. All four of those teams sit at 3-0 in Cup play.
The top second-place finisher in each conference earns a wild-card berth and a place in the quarterfinals. Point differential is the tiebreaker for teams with identical NBA Cup records, so the Celtics need theirs to be better than the losers of Magic-Knicks and Pistons-Bucks.
How can they get there? First, by having Orlando — whose point differential is +60 — beat New York (+15), as it would take a massively lopsided Knicks win to push the Magic below the Celtics. Then, Boston would either need Milwaukee (+29) to win by five or more, or Detroit (+28) to win by six or more.
So, Boston fans should be rooting for the Magic to win and the Bucks or Pistons to win comfortably.
The Celtics bolstered their NBA Cup case with a big fourth quarter Friday night, getting 19 points from Payton Pritchard and a last-second 3-pointer by Sam Hauser to beat Chicago by nine. Boston trailed with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The NBA Cup quarterfinals will be held at home venues on Dec. 10 and 11. The tournament then shifts to Las Vegas for the semifinals (Dec. 14) and championship (Dec. 17).
Teams eliminated before the knockout rounds will play two yet-to-be-scheduled games against other eliminated squads.
