Marshfield man accused of Thanksgiving killing of long-term roommate
A Marshfield man is accused of killing his roommate of more than two decades over a Thanksgiving dinner dispute.
Richard Lombardi, 65, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and assault and battery on a person over 60 following the Wednesday afternoon argument that authorities say led to the death of Frank Griswold, 80.
Lombardi pleaded not guilty to the charges in Plymouth District Court Friday morning, where the judge ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
Lombardi himself called the police just after 4 p.m. Wednesday to report that his roommate was unconscious and bloody on the floor of the kitchen at their shared home at 853 Main St. He told the police he believed Griswold fell and hit his head, according to the assistant district attorney at the arraignment.
When Marshfield Fire Department paramedics arrived, the prosecutor said, they found the older white man lying on his back, a pool of blood under his head from a three-inch gash to his forehead and a cut to his nose. Griswold was not breathing and life-saving attempts at the scene failed. He was pronounced dead at South Shore Hospital at around 4:45 p.m.
An autopsy would reveal that addition to the forehead and nose injuries, Griswold suffered a fracture to a vertebrae in his neck, the prosecutor said.
Lombardi allegedly told police and firefighters that he had fried a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner just two hours earlier and warned Griswold not to touch the food, according to the prosecutor. He then left the kitchen only to find Griswold washing dishes near the food he was warned away from, the prosecutor said. Griswold then allegedly grabbed the older man by the collar of his shirt and thrust him away from the food.
Lombardi and Griswold had known each other since the early 1990s and had lived together since 2001 and at that address since 2008, according to the prosecutor.
