Marshfield pounds Duxbury to break skid

MARSHFIELD – Tor Maas just rewrote the book on how to end your high school football career.

In the 39th annual Thanksgiving matchup, Marshfield broke a four-game holiday slide in a 51-14 rout over Duxbury (10-2).

With the Rams win over the Dragons, Marshfield (10-2) captured the Patriot League Keenan Division title and ended the 16 years of dominance in the division for the Dragons. Duxbury (10-2) owned 16 consecutive championships in the last 17 years and last lost in league play all the way back in 2007.

Marshfield put up 28 points in the first quarter as Maas was unstoppable with a first-half performance to remember as the senior went 11-of-16 on 202 passing with three touchdown passes and added a fourth on the ground from 15 yards out. Maas was 12-of-20 passing for 220 yards and five touchdowns overall.

Maas, who will play football for Tufts next fall, didn’t hide from the streak being the elephant in the room.

“Feels great, especially Thanksgiving and coming home to the family and everything is a happier day. We were reminded of it countless times, it was in our head, and we knew we had to end it,” said Maas. “Today we were able to fire on all cylinders.”

Duxbury will get to play one more time for the Div. 4 Super Bowl title against Scituate while Marshfield’s season ends as they lost to King Philip 34-15 in the Final Four of the D2 playoffs.

Duxbury did not initially rest their starters as Jack Rees held up his end with 12 carries for 94 yards in a little over two quarters of play. Duxbury head coach Matt Landolfi waved the white flag and pulled the starters at 5:44 of the third quarter as the Dragons trailed, 42-14.

The Rams drove the field on a 12-play, 66-yard opening drive of the second half that was punctuated by Maas and his fifth touchdown and second rushing score to put the game away.

Jake Falls pulled down two carbon-copy play action passes as the tight end was able to get behind the Rams secondary for touchdown receptions of 62 and 49 yards to keep things close in the first half after Marshfield had jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway in the first quarter.

Charlie Carroll finished his senior season with a touchdown pass from Maas and ran in another for a pair of scores in the impressive first half for Marshfield. Fellow senior Jake Brilliant punched in a seven-yard score to find the final touches on 16-unanswered points for Marshfield in the fourth quarter.

Big reason for the shocking first-half scoring attack were the three turnovers the Rams created with two coming with Duxbury within striking distance of scoring.

Tim Stiles picked up a fumble on a kickoff to set up Maas for his first rushing touchdown to make things, 28-7. Later, a fumble recovery by Marshfield’s Phoenix Beauregard on a bad snap on a second-and-goal from the six along with a Liam Reilly interception inside the Rams 20-yard line doomed the Dragons right out of the gates.

Marshfield scored on every offensive possession except for the last series of the first half and their final series of the fourth quarter with the substitutions on the field and the game well in hand. The turkey day series record now stands at 19-18-2 record, again with Marshfield taking the lead.

Marshfield head coach Chris Arouca thanked his defensive staff led by Sean Bogni and Jeff Dunn for planning the perfect attack.

“The defense got us going with the kick return fumble and the offense started and stopped with Tor Mass – he was just a force out there. Whether it was throwing the ball or running the ball, he made all the right decisions,” said Arouca. “They (seniors) wanted to play and to turn around after a tough loss in the semifinals and come back and play like they did – they are champions to me, league champions, but certainly just champions – that was awesome.”
