Marblehead extends winning streak to 12 over Swampscott
BOSTON – For the 12th straight season, Marblehead has taken down their tough Northeastern Conference rival Swampscott. This time at Fenway Park with The Silver Slugger trophy on the line and Magicians coach Jim Rudloff back on the sidelines.
Every senior running back ended up in the endzone as Marblehead scored in every quarter to take down Swampscott 42-6 at Fenway last night. Marblehead now leads the series 60-49-6 over 115 meetings.
“Honestly, I don’t even think about that because I’m very superstitious,” said Rudloff about the current Thanksgiving Day streak. “I don’t like to mention that because I’m in it, but we’ve been lucky. We’ve had great kids those last however many years. Like this year, we have 27 seniors, so I would have had to really screw things up to have lost with 27 seniors, but we got a chance to get them all out there tonight.”
From the opening kickoff, Marblehead (8-2) controlled the line of scrimmage as they put together a 15-play drive that ate 8:34 off the clock that was capped by a five-yard touchdown run for senior Yandel Garcia to make it 7-0 with 3:13 to go in the first.
“We wanted to run the ball, but what really was good for us tonight was those couple times we needed the third and long and got it,” Rudloff said. “That hasn’t happened for us all year, so tonight it was very fortunate.”
After forcing a punt, the Magicians once again put together a scoring drive as senior Bernando Bannis found paydirt to start the second quarter after senior captain Colt Wales found senior Sam Tompson for a 47-yard reception to push the lead to 14-0.
Marblehead added two 48-yard TDs after that as junior Finn Gallup found senior captain Brady Selvias for the first to make it 21-0 with seven minutes left in the first half.
Selvias added a two-yard rushing score in the third to make it 35-6 with 6:27 to go in the third.
“What’s important is that every single senior running back on our team got in the endzone,” Selvias said. “There’s no better feeling than your family and your brother getting into the endzone on a beautiful night in a beautiful stadium like this the day before Thanksgiving. It’s truly an indescribable feeling.”
After a Gunther Fehrenbach pick, the Magicians needed just three plays as Gallup found senior captain Crew Monaco for a 48-yard score. Gallup finished the first half 6-of-6 for 113 yards and two passing scores. He finished 7-of-7 for 123 yards.
Swampscott (8-4) got on the board as the first half as time expired as senior Gabe Tripp returned the kickoff from 70 yards out as the Big Blue amounted just 33 scrimmage yards in the first half. Swampscott finished with 88 yards from scrimmage.
“There’s just a different kind of energy when Marblehead prepares for (Swampscott),” Selvias said. “They’re a good team and they had a great season so far and we just came out with a bunch of energy. Nothing like the family on this team this year.”
Senior captain Colt Wales added a two-yard rushing score with just over three minutes left to put the contest away at 42-6.
“It’s the best feeling in the world,” said Wales about getting to score at Fenway. “All that work I put in through the past six months, I don’t know how I did it, with my team surrounding me every step of the way. I love my boys.”
