Nipmuc, Kyah Montano capture Div. 3 girls soccer championship

WORCESTER – Her iconic legacy was already solidified, but Nipmuc girls soccer senior Kyah Montano etched it in stone on the biggest stage Friday night at Worcester State.

The 100-goal scorer capped off her career with the game-winning goal in the 67th minute of the Div. 3 state final, propelling fourth-seeded Nipmuc to a 1-0 win over No. 2 Medfield for the program’s first state title since 2014.

Much of the first half felt frantic and disorganized for Nipmuc, but a clean sheet from the back line and senior goalie Mia Herron (seven saves) gave Montano all the time she needed make the big play she’s made plenty of times in her career.

“I couldn’t have done it without the help of my team,” Montano said. “They assisted every single goal I had, so I’m so grateful for the team I have and I wouldn’t be here without them. … It’s just so special, just finishing where I started. Scoring goals is what I do, so I’m happy I got to end on that.”

Nipmuc head coach Steve Khoury felt afterward his team showed a major difference between halves.

Not much was done with its seven corner kicks in the first, while Medfield attacked Herron plenty with five shots on net – including one to the top left corner that Herron just barely got to to direct the ball into the crossbar. Medfield had a lead in shots on net and threatened a bevy of times.

Most of the second half saw Nipmuc control possession, though, often keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field.

“I thought (Medfield) really brought it in the first half,” Khoury said. “We just played with much more composure (in the second half).”

“We settled down a little in the second half and just connected, and played like we always play,” Montano added.

Pressure kept building for Nipmuc after the break, and Montano finally cashed in on a beautiful feed from Abigail Mullins.

Mullins drew the defender on the left side to send a ball diagonally for Montano to get around the edge, and she used her speed and scoring prowess to finish it off and ultimately seal the championship.

“Her and (Mullins) work so well together up top,” Khoury said. “I’m super psyched for the girls. I don’t know if I’ll get some sleep tonight or not, but I’m super psyched for them. They work so hard.”

Montano may have tallied the game-winning goal, but there’s much to be said about the defensive unit to keep Medfield off the board all night despite several promising opportunities.

“We have a really strong back line,” Montano said. “They’re like brick walls. I knew they’d … keep that steady.”
