Masconomet caps memorable season by capturing Div. 2 state girls soccer title

WORCESTER – Thanks to an historic performance, Masconomet brought home its first girls soccer state title since 1989.

A hat trick for senior captain Amanda Schneider sandwiched by two goals for sophomore sensation Maggie Blosser was all it took as the top-seeded Chieftains toppled No. 2 Duxbury 5-0 in the Div. 2 state title game at Worcester State University on Saturday morning.

“There really aren’t any words,” Masconomet coach Alison Lecesse said about winning the state title in their third straight undefeated regular season. “I’m just so proud of these girls. They’ve worked so hard in season and out of season. This is just the culmination of it.”

Schneider led Masconomet (22-0-1) with three tallies for the sixth hat trick in state title history. Her first came off a left-foot shot from about 35 yards out in the 18th minute to push the lead to 2-0.

She later added another in the 39th minute off an assist from sophomore Maggie Blosser that made it 3-0 at the half. The tally came less than a minute after Duxbury’s (20-2-1) Meg Carney hit the corner of the right post in the 38th minute.

“There’s a lot of momentum shifts in the game in general, but this year we’ve seen it a lot,” said Lecesse about the goal at the end of the half. “We can strike back quick and it takes the wind out of the sails of the other team.”

Her final goal came in the 47th minute as she buried another shot in front of the net as the Chieftains led 4-0.

In the first half, Masconomet got it started early as Maggie Blosser finished off a rebound chance from twin Lily Blosser to make it 1-0 in the 12th minute.

“It’s awesome,” Schneider said about playing on an offensive attack that netted 101 goals in 23 matches. “There’s so many of us that can finish. So, just to know that you can pass it off to anybody if you are stuck and that they can create an opportunity as well.”

Maggie Blosser added her second to finish off the scoring at 5-0 in the 59th minute. In net, sophomore Evy Mills made two saves for the shutout.
