Led by Meaghan Brazeau, Douglas nips Hull for Div. 5 girls soccer title
MILTON — Douglas fans had waited 22 years to see the Tigers win another girls soccer title and, thanks to junior Meaghan Brazeau, the drought is over.
The striker sniped a pair of goals, including the game-clincher off a free kick in the 69th minute, as top-ranked Douglas captured the Div. 5 crown with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 2 Hull at Curry College.
It was the first championship for Douglas (17-5-1) since 2002, when the Tigers were still in Div. 3. Junior midfielder Sadie O’Toole fired a rocket into the net from nearly 25 yards out in the 13th minute, as Douglas seized a 1-0 advantage.
However, Hull (16-3-4) responded with force. Sophomore Libby Harper proceeded to dribble up field, dangling past defenders before burying the equalizer, tying things in the 19th minute at 1-all. The Pirates would tack on another goal in the 37th minute following a foul call just outside the box, as Elly Thomas ripped a shot into the netting off the ensuing free kick to make it a 2-1 contest.
As the second half wore on, the Tigers ramped up the pressure, but struggled to break through Hull’s final defensive wall. That was until Brazeau slipped loose on a breakaway bid in the 56th minute, sliding a shot home to tie the game at 2-2.
With the game hanging in the balance in the 69th minute, the Pirates were whistled for a handball violation, creating a golden set piece opportunity for Douglas. The Tigers turned to Brazeau, based on a gut feeling.
The junior hooked a beautiful shot inside the left post to put Douglas ahead 3-2.
“She hit two at practice yesterday,” said Douglas coach Jarred Stand. “It was her first free kick all year. So she’s 1-for-1, and she’s 1,000 percent on her free kicks.”
The Tigers had one final bullet to dodge, as Harper took off on a breakaway for Hull in the 76th minute, searching for her second goal. After taking over in net at the half, freshman Jasmine Trudeau made a heroic save to preserve the lead, and her teammates stormed her in celebration moments later.
“It means everything to me,” said Brazeau. “I told my athletic director, she always asks me before every game how many goals I’m going to score. I told her I was going to score two goals today. So, it felt really awesome to fulfill that. It was great, and I love all my teammates. It was an amazing feeling, best feeling ever.”
As the Douglas crowd roared, Stand could only smile as the ceremonies progressed.
“It’s a whole community atmosphere,” Stand said. “We actually had a sendoff from the high school today, with our police, our fire (department). Our community has been behind us from the very beginning, and it means a lot. We’ve been meaning to add another little sign in town, and we’re excited for that.”
