Division 3 volleyball: Medfield drought ends in sweep of Weston
BILLERICA — Senior Ally Bonoldi finished with seven kills, including the match-clinching point, as second-seeded Medfield won its first volleyball championship since 2010 with a 3-0 sweep of Weston in the Div. 3 final at Billerica Memorial High School.
“They wanted to rewrite history,” said Medfield coach Arthur Felicio. “They wanted to flip the switch. They knew that they could do it, and I believed in them through and through.”
Medfield (21-4) not only faced the same school that swept them in the 2023 finals, but Weston (17-7) had already knocked off the Warriors twice during the regular season.
“We were really motivated,” Bonoldi said. “We wanted to take it, we knew we could. We knew about last year, put it in the past. We played so well this season, and we just wanted to come out and show them who we are.”
Medfield won by set scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-21. Junior Kendall Larkin paced the team with nine kills, while senior captain Lily Brodeur added five kills.
Weston was propelled by Providence College commit Fielding Mayhugh, who had 14 kills.
With Medfield clinging to a 24-21 advantage in the third set, a wild rally ensued, spanning nearly 40 seconds, Bonoldi sealed the deal with a thundering spike for her final kill. As the crowd erupted, the Warriors stormed the court to greet her seconds later.
“We were really battling,” said Bonoldi. “They were battling. It’s such a relief when a long rally like that goes in our favor. It’s so fun playing with these girls.”
After serving as a junior varsity assistant, Felicio took over at Medfield this fall. Only 21, the future now seems quite bright for the new head coach and his program.
“I’m going to remember (this senior class) for the next few years,” Felicio said. “This first year coaching has definitely served as a stepping stone for the next years that I coach.”
