Field hockey: Watertown dynasty marches on
WORCESTER – A strong defensive performance helped Watertown to a 2-0 victory over Sandwich in the Div. 3 field hockey state championship.
It was Watertown’s fourth consecutive title and the 22nd in program history. Both teams entered the game unbeaten; the Raiders win extended its streak to 97.
“Very proud of my coaches, very proud of my captains, I am proud of everyone,” head coach Eileen Donahue said. “This process has been very hard, and I am glad they have this moment.”
The Lady Knights came out on fire, carrying play throughout the first quarter to get several strong corner chances.
“Their corner plays are very strong, so we worked hard last week to have a few different strategies against it,” Donahue said. “Our team defense definitely helped out today.”
But it was the Raiders who broke through in the second quarter when Caroline Andrade capitalized after powering into the crease.
For the second half Andrade slid back into a more defensive role.
“We needed more of a defensive game,” Andrade said. “Since I had already scored the first one, I felt like it was a better opportunity for me to help out in the defensive area.”
A corner opportunity for the Raiders early in the fourth set sophomore Kaylee Master up. “I inserted and stood on post,” Master said. “Caroline took the initial shot and I was able to tip it in. I was in shock but I was really happy and excited.”
This gave the team a two-goal lead it would not relinquish, and an unprecedented send-off for Watertown’s seniors.
“I haven’t lost a game in my career in field hockey,” Andrade said. “It feels amazing, I don’t know how else to say it.”
