Bruins make lineup changes ahead of matinee against Blues
With the Bruins struggling find any kind of consistency, management dipped into Providence to see if they could get some energy from new blood as tey take on the St. Louis Blues for the second time in a week on Saturday at te Garden (1 p.m.).
The B’s brought up forwards Georgii Merkulov and Riley Tufte while Patrick Brown, who’d been brought up for Tyler Johnson (family reasons), was sent back to Providence.
Merkulov, who had a mediocre camp and was sent down to to the AHL, has heated up in Providence and earned a recall with 2-9-11 totals in 12 games.
Johnny Beecher, who had his minutes cut lately and also had an unforced icing that led to a goal against in the B’s 7-2 loss in Dallas on Thursday, was the scratch up front. Johnson remains out, but coach Jim Montgomery said that he’’ll be back at practice on Sunday.
Merkulov will be playing left wing.
“He’s someone who’s produced a lot in the American league. Hopefully, he can help us 5-on-5 and on the power play,” said Montgomery.
Tufte, who had made the roster out of camp and played two games before being sent down, has three goal and an assist in six games in Providence.
“He’s someone who possesses pucks well.. He scored 27 goals in the American league last year with Colorado. It’s something that with his size and strength, besides being able to be heavy on the forecheck, he can get to the net front, put people on his back and get inside the dots for scoring chances,” said Montgomery.
To create a roster spot, Hampus Lindholm (lower body, week-to-week) was placed on injured reserve.
