Sydney Freese leads Brookline past King Philip and into state semifinal
BROOKLINE — In the late stages of the postseason, it is always best to trust your star players.
Sydney Freese proved exactly why Thursday. The senior captain sniped a pair of goals, propelling third-ranked Brookline back to the Div. 1 girls soccer semifinals for a second consecutive season with a 2-0 shutout of No. 6 King Philip at Parsons Field.
“She’s easily the most consistent four-year player I think I’ve ever seen,” said Brookline coach Ben Peters. “She’s played every position on the field, outside of goalkeeper in her four years. Freshman, sophomore year, she was our starting center back. Now she’s our forward scoring goals. She means everything to this team. She does it all.”
It took all of 21 seconds for Freese to leave her mark, as she fired a rocket into the twine following the game’s opening kick to provide Brookline (11-6-3) an instant 1-0 edge.
“I think it just set us up defensively right away,” Peters said. “We watched the previous couple of games. We knew what their formation was, who they attacked with, and I think it set us up defensively really well.”
After a backbreaking play to open regulation, King Philip (18-3-0) settled the tempo, and controlled possession to a large extent. Yet, the Warriors simply could not get past Brookline’s final defensive wall, and were held scoreless throughout the opening half.
Later, in the 28th minute, Dartmouth commit Anna Leschley lofted a deep pass toward Freese in transition. The forward waited for the precise instance, then broke upfield.
“Honestly, I saw her pick her head up,” said Freese. “She kind of picked her foot up for a bigger kick. So, it was just about staying onside, then using the right moment to sprint ahead and get control of the ball.”
Freese settled the pass, then dribbled free for a breakaway. She finished her attempt by rolling the ball harmlessly past the keeper to put Brookline ahead, 2-0, an advantage the Warriors would sustain for the rest of the night.

“It was our last home game ever on Parsons and this field,” Freese said. “So we knew that whatever we did, we wanted to go out playing as hard as we could.”
The victory for Brookline sets up a showdown with second-seeded Wellesley in the Div. 1 Final Four. Set to face a Bay State Conference rival, you can expect the squad to be prepared as they chase the ultimate form of destiny.
“I think it will be a very intense game,” said Leschly. “I think we have a little bit of a ‘revenge tour’ in us right now. We lost both of our games to them this season, and I think that we believe within ourselves that we can beat them. They’re obviously an extremely talented team. So, it will be a really good matchup, and yes, definitely a local rivalry type of game, but I’m excited. It will be a good game.”
